Broodlord

Broodlord 1

Quick post, partly to say I'm not dead, and partly to put up a picture of my recently completed broodlord. It's taken with a real camera, so you might actually be able to see it. Other than him, there are 7 other genestealers done... I really need to pick up the pace if I'm gonna get this list (which is nowhere near finalized yet) done. One of the variants has some 30-40 gaunts :S

Termagant 1

And the first gaunt. Tossed a bit of red on there at Chris' suggestion, I think it turned out well.

Nids

Genestealer 1

Alright well my next project is slowly getting underway. Always feels like things go slow when I'm trying to pick a scheme and do up the first few models. The theme is space hulk. Chris is taking blood angels, and I've got the genestealer heavy nid list. The current draft at the moment is... well I thought it was something that has too many troops for the doubles format, so I'll have to work on that I guess. Anyways there's a bunch of genestealers with a brood lord and a bunch (well slightly less now) of gaunts, some zoanthropes and a tervigon.

So the scheme is very oldschool genestealers - here are a couple shots.

Another Corsair Banner

Corsair Banner 3

Well I'm getting tired of long upload times and fighting with the flash on the camera, so this'll be the last one for the evening. The design is simple yet effective, but I think I could have made it a lot bigger on the banner (50-70%). The lack of coverage was what prompted me to put on the border, and in hindsight that worked out great, really makes the whole thing pop.

Hydralicious

Hydra 1

The hydra is the best monster 175 points can buy, so how could I not include one in the list? Isn't he adorable? My major complaint with the paintjob is the difficulty I had lining the teal. Couldn't find the sweet spot for paint consistency - either too wet and the lines lost definition and widened out, or too dry and I couldn't get enough flow from the brush to get a full line in without running out. I'm also very jealous of Kevin's skill with horns and teeth - you should see that guy's stegadon. Puts those spines on the hydra to shame. I think I just need to replace my brushes more often. A standard size brush with a sharp, sharp tip is a must for clean lines.

Cold One Banner

Cold One Banner

Right well the picture of the second character didn't pan out so well (focus on the tail only? bugger), so here's another one of the banners, this time from the Cold Ones. I like this design almost as much as squidface (previous), and this one is executed much more cleanly (I was warmed up by the other 2 banners by the time I got to this one). I think I still need to go back and put some runes in that border, it feels a little empty. The only semi-negative comment I've had on this guy is that he's more Khemri than Dark Elf, but hey, if that's all you can pick on, I'm fine with that :)

Master

Master 3

Characters are always the most nicely done bits of an army for me, so let's go with a couple of those. Here's the male character on his cold one. I figured out a couple of features on the camera to get good focus, no washout with the flash and nice bright colours :) It's interesting, you can actually pick out more of the detail in the picture than when picking up the model.

If I had to critique this guy I'd harp about the brown being a little flat, the blends on the purple and teal being a little sharp and the skin on the cold one being a little sloppy.

On the plus side, I love how the sword matches the armor and how clean I managed to keep the grey.

Full 1100

DE Army 1

Here's a nice shot of the Dark Elves and the display board. Notice the learning experience for this project to the right of the dock - resin melts foam really really well, be sure to seal with more glue next time.

WMFC2010 Postgame

Corsair Banner 2

Well the fantasy challenge is done for this year, and I made out pretty well. I went about 500 on the weekend in terms of games, but Kevin and I picked up best appearance on Saturday with the Dark Elves and Lizards, and I placed second for painting on Sunday with my Daemons. I got my hands on a proper digital camera for a change, so I have some pictures of the highlights of the Dark Elf army to show off. Unfortunately I forgot to bring the camera with me on the weekend, so I don't have pictures of the doubles list, but I think a few were taken by the organizers so I'm hoping they pop up in the galleries.

First off here's one of the corsair banners. One of these days I'll get lighting down properly, but not today, so please excuse the odd orange glow. This was, I think, my most inspired design for a banner for this army. It's not executed quite a neatly as the cav banner, for instance, but I think it came out well. Sadly, my brush strokes are betrayed by photography on the background :P. Oh and if you're wondering, yes, the design is on both sides of the banner. Finally, I think I should have given this a border instead of a couple of runes, it doesn't pop quite as well as the other corsair banner IMO.

Behold the first corsair banner. I'm quite happy with the result. Now to repeat it on the other side, i.e. the hard part...
