Autarch: Exarch Only; Captain Only; 50 XP required: The Exarch gains access to Autarch only items. Just to make sure I'm reading thi right. Any Exarch Captian that reaches 50 experience automaticly becomes a Autarch? Not other requirements besides being an Echarch that reaches 50 exp. Do there stats change to that of an Autarch or do they keep there origional stats? Forgive me if these questions seem stupid, I just stumbled apon this yesterday so I'm still trying to wrap my head around all of this! Anyways I like the idea so far. I prefer skirmish games over mass combat games so this seems right up my ally. :-) Keep up the good work!

Hi

Thanks for the questions.

We are currently working on the rules for Autarchs and other Captain only upgrades for all warbands. I believe that Eldar is the one list where we made allusions to future rules, because we felt we needed to restrict access to Autarch wargear in the early game..

We haven't finalized what will happend when your captain reaches 50 XP. But here are some of the things we are considering:
- for example - should it be automatic or a skill selection?
- should stat maximums be shifted for captains?
- should a stat boost be part of the upgrade?
- how badly does game balance shift for bands with upgraded captains VS bands without. Should the experience rating of the band receive an additional boost for having an upgraded captain?

Comments and feedback on these questions would be appreciated.

Cheers
Nate

Do other warbands have access to HQ choice characters? If not maybe the Autarch upgrade is OTT. If others are allowed HQ choices. Then having an Autarch doesn't seem so bad, after all, all of his equipment options looks verry evpensive!

Still new at this and don't know a lot about other armies except tyranids and eldar so bear with me ;-)

Afaik the other armies all have access to hq choice type upgrades for their heroes. Some of it isn't implemented yet (e.g. none of the psykers are done yet, so no librarians, farseers, weirdboys, sorcerors, etc.), but I'm pretty sure the marines can get a captain, orks a warboss, etc.

Doesn't that seem a little big for a game of this calibre? I mean, sure, an Autarch is a pretty cool "captain", but to me the game seems like it'd be more about small teams of troops leading assaults on vital assets, searching for intel, ect. Essentially special forces teams fighting it out.

Chaos armies can currently take a Thousand Sons Aspiring champion, which is a little powerful, but not over the top at all(considering force weapons don't do much on 1 wound models). An eldar Autarch, Space Marine Captain or any other 3 wound commander seems to be way to much for something this size.

I'd be better to keep them small I think stat wise, but allow them to take a few Autarch/special items, or give them some rules, ect to represent thier status as experienced commanders. Something that opens up over 50exp or so.

I think the idea is that the 3 wound HQ choices will appear over time and late game (i.e. 50xp+) and only 1 per band.

This gives the idea that over the course of a dozen or more missions your special forces leader stops being just a cool character and becomes an epic hero.

Also, it helps to combat the effect that late levels there are large numbers of things like melta guns and things like powerfist that can make a mockery of characters with a single shot...even if they are the 3 wound characters.

The difference between theory and practice is that in theory there is no difference, but in practice, there is.

Yeah, I guess that instant death will really start to take effect then. Forgot about that.
